A very young Louis XIII came to Versailles for the first in 1607, to accompany his father Henry IV on the hunt. In 1623, he decided to have a hunting lodge built there so that he could stay overnight. He slept at this royal country residence for the first time in June 1624, before having it rebuilt and extended in 1631. The world’s most beautiful palace was in the making, but its stunning location fascinated French sovereigns – and had done for four hundred years!
What if, before moving into his new abode, the King wanted to give it an extra sheen with a religious consecration, as was so customary for royal buildings? This is an opportunity to hear this splendid music from the reign of Louis XIII, the origins of the French baroque style that was the source of musical glory which Louis XIV would take to new artistic heights.
Jean-Baptiste Nicolas brings together the great Mass for Double Choir by Nicolas Formé, principal composer for the Royal Chapel of Henry IV and then Louis XIII, Motets by the admirable Guillaume Bouzignac the inspired Eustache du Caurroy, and a garland of fanfares in which the royal trumpets make a magnificent match for the soloists, the children of the Maîtrise de Paris, the Choir of the Opéra Royal and the Consort Musica Vera, for an exhilarating concert!
