During the Grand Siècle, tears in the Holy Scripture were shed as an elixir of purity and a miraculous source of inspiration. The Virgin Mary’s tears mourning her son at the foot of the Cross, Saint Peter crying over his betrayal of Jesus, and Christ’s himself, abandoned by all, capture dazzling light between the hands of Charpentier and his Italian master Carissimi, combining Italian theatricality to French dulcet delicacy. Gaétan Jarry and his musicians will revive the splendid music of Italian and French Catholicism, with Allegri’s incredible Miserere as the landmark composition of the Sistine Chapel in Saint Peter in Rome.
