Ballet-pantomime in four acts created at the Royal Academy of music in Paris in 1829.
Charles Perrault's famous fairy tale inspired the French composer Louis-Ferdinand Hérold (Beethoven’s exact contemporary) the music for a ballet for the Paris Opera in 1829. Sixty years later, Tchaikovsky wrote the music for a ballet based on the same tale for the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg: a performance that has remained a Russian legend with choreography by Petipa. But let's go back to the much less known French version...
It was a " fairytale ballet-pantomime ", i.e., a dance piece of vast proportions (four acts) in which the characters are embodied by star dancers. Unlike opera, no one sings: the story is told through the dancers’ gestures and face expressions (pantomime).
Hérold's music is no longer included in the concert repertoire: this is an injustice that Hervé Niquet wishes to repair by staying true to the original music and to the slightest indications in the score. On the other hand, the part danced and choreographed by Philippe Lafeuille is not concerned at all with historical truth. Created in 2011, his show plays with the argument in the style of a parody and turns the romantic ballet into a mischievous farce close to the comedians’ Shirley and Dino’s quirky and humorous style.
