Presentation

In European baroque music, the Grands Motets are one of the most representative forms of French music. Originally developed for the King's Chapel by Du Mont and Lully, and brought to fruition by Delalande during his four decades at the service of Louis XIV, these works, which were sung daily at the King's Mass, were later the pillars of the programmes of the Concert Spirituel created in 1725. It was then that two new masters in this style, Rameau and Mondonville, became established.

Jean Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) composed his grand motets before his arrival in Paris. They are an exception in the genre: they were not written for the Chapelle du Roi, but around 1720, when Rameau was organist of the Clermont Ferrand cathedral! Their resemblance with the future operas of the master is however obvious, so exceptional and subtle is the musical atmosphere that emerges from them. His two masterpieces the motets In Convertendo and Quam Dilecta are gathered here.

Drawing from both Lalande and Rameau, Mondonville (1711-1772) was a real star of the Concert Spirituel with his motets, whose success earned him a position at the Chapelle Royale! The inventiveness and expressiveness of his compositions, where dramatic effects and colours enrich a perfect mastery of choral and orchestral forces, make them true jewels and the last masterpieces of this essentially French form... Celebrated in their time by multiple interpretations, the two motets Dominus Regnavit and In Exitu Israel are true masterpieces, comparable to the greatest choral compositions of Bach or Handel.

With excellent soloists and the choristers and musicians of his Ensemble Marguerite Louise, Gaétan Jarry brings to these works his enthusiastic reading and his passion for French music, for a dazzling programme recorded in our discographic collection!
