Presentation
A new production of Purcell’s masterpiece, this Fairy Queen focuses on youthfulness and inventiveness for near-total spectacle!
In an enchanted forest, reality meets dreams, illusion and the supernatural, while the paths and love stories of young Athenians, woodland fairies and a troupe of actors cross.
Inspired by A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Fairy Queen draws on Shakespeare's comedy to create a funny yet magical tale that continues to amaze more than 300 years after its creation. Performed for the first time in London in 1692, just three years before Purcell's untimely death at the age of 35, this semi-opera is the work of a young prodigy. It features some of the most beautiful arias he ever composed – such as the very poignant "O let me weep" or the lively "Thrice happy lovers" – in which his artful counterpoint and his sense of theatre are truly showcased.
It is precisely this panache, energy and youthfulness that this new production aims to convey. Conducted by William Christie and Paul Agnew, alongside choreographer Mourad Merzouki – in his first collaboration on an opera – this Fairy Queen will be an opportunity to discover the latest winners of the Jardin des Voix, the academy for young singers run by Les Arts Florissants. These eight soloists, selected from around the world and already attracting the attention of the entire baroque sphere, will by turns take on all the characters of this joyful story, alongside contemporary dancers from the Käfig company.
The result is a full lyrical experience, resolutely young and new, where the art of the past and present combine to truly delight the senses!
With the generous support of Aline Foriel-Destezet, Grand Patron of The Fairy Queen and Jardin des Voix; and the Société Générale Foundation C'est vous l'avenir, Grand Patron of Jardin des Voix.
