Christina Pluhar Theorbo and conductor
No Italian composer was more successful in France during the 17th century than Luigi Rossi, composer, harpist, lutist, singer and organist.
A student of Jean de Macque in Naples, Luigi Rossi went on to Rome in 1614. He then entered the service of the Borghese family and became organist at the Saint Louis-des-Français church in Rome. In 1635, Ferdinand II de Medici invited him to Florence where he spent several years.
During the early years of Louis XIV’s reign, Cardinal Mazarin governed France; he decided to import the most brilliant shows from the Italian capitals, famous for their operas and their vocal stars: the castrati.
From 1645 onwards, musicians such as Marco Marazzoli, the castrati Atto Melani and Mario Savioni, and most importantly the composer Luigi Rossi, arrived in Paris to perform his Orfeo before the court in 1647, the most ambitious production ever presented in France. The programme of the concert is based on two precious manuscripts given to Queen Anne of Austria, kept at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. They contain about a hundred Italian cantatas, most of them composed by Luigi Rossi, which illustrate the performance of Italian vocal music by Italian and French singers at court. Under Christina Pluhar's enlightened direction, the two heroes of the evening, Philippe Jaroussky and Valer Sabadus, bring to life the treasures that turned the heads of the courtiers and made Italian music the source of opera in France: the beauty and voluptuousness of Italian castrati in Paris...
