Michael Haydn’s powerful and poignant 1771 Requiem, a considerable composition, was written for the funeral of the Archbishop of Salzburg, which the young Mozart attended. When Mozart wrote his own version, twenty years later, the memory of this striking composition was still present in his mind, and there are many of parallels to be found between Mozart’s famous work and Michael Haydn’s Requiem.
Together these two masterpieces compose a remarkable programme, with an unparalleled cast, and the King’s Consort’s prestigious choir and orchestra fervently conducted by Robert King for an unforgettable concert.
An immensely successful record and a sold-out concert at the 2006 BBC proms, Michael Haydn’s remarkable Requiem twinned with Mozart’s famous Requiem compose a magnificent programme and reveal fascinating musicological links.
