Emiliano Gonzalez Toro Conductor
In 1607, Claudio Monteverdi created his Orfeo, a musical fable, in Mantua, for the opening of Carnival at the Court Theatre of Duke Vincenzo I. For the first time in the history of music, real characters were animated by overwhelming human feelings: this exceptional dramatic power is the source of modern opera.
Tenor Emiliano Gonzalez Toro is one of the great experts of this repertoire, which he has sung on the most illustrious stages. He is currently the most credible heir to tenor Francesco Rasi, who created the role of Orfeo in Mantua. The Ensemble I Gemelli, which he directs, brings together first-rate vocal and instrumental virtuosos, all acclaimed specialists of the Italian Seicento. The CD recording which they have just made together could prove to be the great modern reference of one of music’s most iconic scores: this concert illustrates its magnificence, but live and in public this time!
Claudio Monteverdi (1567 – 1643)
