Homer’s Odysseus is sublimated in William Kentridge’s reconstruction of Monterverdi’s masterpiece Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria. Transposed to Johannesburg in the middle of the 20th century, this version combines the wonderful music and libretto with animated charcoal drawings by William Kentridge and life size wooden puppets sculpted by the Handspring Puppet Company, confronting the public to the powerful myth.
Interpreted by the Ricercar Consort conducted by the ancient music specialist Philippe Pierlot, Ulysses is not in Ithaca anymore. Instead, he sees his life unfolding in a hospital bed in Johannesburg, before death greets him. The passionate memory of his wife Penelope becomes an epic dream where classical Greece, Monteverdi’s Venice and contemporary South Africa meet. An incredible story of return, fortune, adoration and human frailty.
This Return of Ulysses was created in 1998 at the Brussels Festival des Arts. The production has since then met with great success in South Africa, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Portugal, France, the United-States, Luxembourg, Italy, Australia and the United Kingdom.
Production 1998: La Monnaie/DeMunt (Bruxelles), Handspring Puppet Company (Le Cap, Afrique du Sud), Wiener Festwochen, Festival des Arts (Bruxelles), avec le généreux soutien du gouvernement flamand.
