Presentation
A magnificent score that doesn't leave a moment's respite, an unrestrained conductor for this work full of colours and twists and turns, Mondonville's Apollonian signature, Basil Twist's sparkling staging and his puppets of all sizes, nothing is missing from this production to make your eyes open wide and amaze your ears!
This 1753 opera-ballet is an absolute success in the director's humorous and poetic vision, supported by a flourishing cast and Mondonville's verve, which William Christie transfigures at the head of his musical forces. A protégé of Madame de Pompadour, Mondonville was already famous for his irresistible Grands Motets and at the height of his art: here he summons the splendour of French opera, the incredible colours of his Rameau-style orchestration and the gems of Italian style, to charm to the highest degree. Here is a masterpiece of lightness, elegance and expressiveness, in which voices and orchestra constantly compete in invention and surprises, for an absolute musical treasure. Here is a masterpiece of lightness, elegance and expressiveness, in which voices and orchestra constantly compete in invention and surprises, for a musical gem that is more exciting than ever! Mondonville, a musical genius and incorrigible charmer, has found here the magnificent embodiment of his talents to transform a divine sheepfold into a supercharged spectacle!
This new production is made possible thanks to the exceptional support of the ADOR - The Friends of the Royal Opera.
