Mathias Vidal Tenor
Ensemble Marguerite Louise
Gaétan Jarry Conductor
Rameau was unquestionably the master of 18th century French opera, writing for the stage from 1733 until his death in 1764. These three decades saw the creation of some thirty lyrical works, with considerable place given to the French-style haute-contre as interpreter of most of the title roles: Platea, Castor, Dardanus, Zoroaster, Hippolyte, Pygmalion… This voice, very specific to French opera, was embodied in Rameau's time by Pierre de Jelyotte, who created most of the master's great works.
The singer Mathias Vidal is today one of the most brilliant representatives of the countertenor tessiture and one of the best specialists of this music to which he dedicates an important part of his lyrical work. He has also sung the majority of Rameau's operas on stage and embodies their characters with all the more clarity. With Gaétan Jarry, he has designed a programme with the most brilliant and expressive arias, adding two complementary parameters: the possibility of singing in recital the arias accompanied by a choir (traditionally abandoned for budgetary reasons), and also presenting magnificent haute-contre arias which are not those of the title role (Thespis in Platée, Calisis in Les Boréades...).
Here, then, is an anthology that highlights the brilliant voice of Mathias Vidal, a pillar of the Royal Opera of Versailles where, from Mozart to Berlioz and Offenbach, he has also deployed his valiant tenor voice; but it is obviously in the great baroque works that he is most "at home". For a French singer with a passion for the 17th and18th century repertoire, recording a recital of Rameau's haute-contre arias is a summit! This concert will be recorded for the Château de Versailles Spectacles Label
