Rameau was undoubtedly the master of French opera in the 18th century, writing for the stage from 1733 until his death in 1764. During these three decades, he created some thirty operatic works, in which the French countertenor voice is given considerable prominence, to the point of being the chosen tessiture for most of the title roles: Platée, Castor, Dardanus, Zoroastre, Hippolyte, Pygmalion....
This very distinctive voice in French music was embodied in Rameau's time by Pierre de Jelyotte, who created most of the master’s great works.
The singer Mathias Vidal is today one of the most brilliant representatives of the countertenor tessitura, and one of the best specialists of this music to which he dedicates a large part of his operatic work. He has also sung most of Rameau's operas on stage and interprets their characters even more naturally. With Gaétan Jarry, he has devised a programme of the most brilliant and expressive arias, adding two further features: arias accompanied by a choir (traditionally abandoned for budgetary reasons) and magnificent countertenors arias not composed for the title role (Thespis in Platée, Calisis in Les Boréades...)
Here is an anthology that showcases Mathias Vidal's splendid voice - he regularly sings at the Royal Opera of Versailles and has deployed his valiant tenor voice from Mozart to Berlioz and Offenbach; but it is obviously in the great baroque works that he is most "at home". For a French singer with a passion for the 17th and 18th century repertoire, recording a recital of Rameau's Haute-Contre is a high point!
