Presentation

The famous Czech mezzo-soprano, a wonderful interpreter of great baroque heroines, Magdalena Kožená, will lend her sensuous and expressive voice to her favourite repertoire. Václav Luks will accompany her with his Collegium 1704. The Czech ensemble contributed among other to the rediscovery of Biber’s Missa Salisburgensis in Versailles and of Vivaldi’s opera Arsilda.

Tragedy has always inspired the most beautiful pages to musicians. The most theatrical librettos soon found the finest musical setting, giving birth to tragedies in music, giving way to opera seria in Italy. Handel was one of the most fertile composers of this form. The figures of women prey to the vagaries of fate and the throes of passion abound in this central style of baroque music.

To build this Garden of Sighs, Magdalena Kožená and Václav Luks summon Handel and his Italian cantatas, dramatic scenes built like an opera act, and Venetian and Neapolitan composers of the same period.

From manipulative Agrippina, ready to stoop to anything to put her son Nero on the throne, to the magician Armida bewitching Rinaldo, and the priestess Hero who cannot survive her lover Leander’s accidental death, Magdalena Kožená gives flesh to these legendary heroines, with all the depth and virtuosity of her singing.
