Jakub Józef Orliński Countertenor
Il Giardino d'Amore
Stefan Plewniak Conductor
How do you create a storm with the public and music critics at 30? By becoming a star in two seasons thanks to a remarkable countertenor voice and the build of a break dancer! Here is undoubtedly one of the fastest and most astonishing careers in classical music, in the baroque repertoire. For this new programme, Jakub Józef Orliński has chosen to work with his Polish compatriots from the Ensemble Il Giardino d'Amore, conducted from the violin by Stefan Plewniak. And the programme is an anthology of works by two 18th century masters: the Italian Vivaldi and the German Handel.
First some arias by Handel, from the operas of his maturity which were all the craze in London thanks to the voices of the most famous Italian castrati: Tamerlano (1724, Andrea Paccini), Riccardo Primo (1726, Senesino), Tolomeo (1728, Senesino), Partenope (1730, Antonio Bernacchi). Then Vivaldi, with some orchestral pieces to intersect Handel's arias, taken from his famous violin concertos admired all over Europe during the composer's lifetime. Orliński also sings an aria from Vivaldi’s opera Giustino; it was created for the Rome Carnival in 1724, but (since women were not allowed to sing in Rome) only with male performers, including 7 castrati! (Handel also used the same libretto for his own Giustino, premiered in London in 1737, with the castrato Gizziello in the title role).
There is no doubt that in this display of virtuosity and sensitivity, hallmarks of the best castrati, Orliński is at the firmament!
