Presentation

The baroque period in Italy was an Eldorado for the arts and music in particular. Handel who had just experienced his first success at the Hamburg opera, travelled there as soon as he could and went on to conquer the Vatican capital aged only 22. He arrived in Rome in January 1707 and was immediately noticed during an organ concert at the Basilica of St John Lateran. Immediately all vied for his talents, Cardinals Pamphili, Ottoboni and Colonna gave him commissions, and Prince Francesco Maria Ruspoli’s accommodated him. He integrated the art group of the Accademia dell’ Arcadia with Corelli, Scarlatti, Caldara and Steffani among others…

His first oratorio Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, (The Triumph of Time and Disillusion) was created in May and met with great success. Handel became a star of private Roman receptions, where the genius of the Lutheran composer was admired at heart of Catholicism. Handel composed the Trionfo on a libretto by Cardinal Benedetto Pamphili, with the same energy as an opera: a genre that was forbidden by a papal edict, it was however blithely replaced by oratorios, performed by excellent singers – including the Pope’s best castrati – and the virtuoso musicians carried away by Corelli’s demands.

A true Handelian musical celebration, Il Trionfo abounds in magnificent arias, which the composer would reuse all along his career, the oratorio itself would later have an English version, showing how much Handel himself valued the first masterpiece of his Italian period!

Sébastien d’Hérin, his soloists and musicians perform Il Trionfo with all the brilliance intended in Handel’s score.
