Lionel Meunier Conductor
Handel rarely composed for the church: the Dixit Dominus is a psalm written during his stay in Rome, along Venetian models with elements from Gregorian chant. The vocal picture created by the intense emotion of the sung words is highly striking, evoking the smallness of man faced to the immensity of the universe…
To reach the Almighty, Saint Cecil, patron saint of music, sings her prayers in the secret of her soul. On November 22nd 1739, Handel composed a tribute to her, an ode on a poem by John Dryden. The very first words are: “From harmony, from heav’nly harmony, this universal frame began.”
If harmony is the beginning, music is given as a precious tool.
