A show for families
A King imprisoned, his knights who want to free him and sing their loyalty to him, a famous aria "Ô Richard, Ô mon Roi" sung in the Opéra Royal by Louis XVI's bodyguards at their banquet on 1 October 1789, to greet Marie-Antoinette and the King, unleashing the crowd's vindictiveness and bringing them to Versailles, which forced the royal family to leave the château on 6 October, never to return... This was the end of Versailles and its Opéra Royal. Here is the revival on stage of Grétry's famous Richard Coeur de Lion (1784), the most famous 18th century French comic opera in Europe for a century... and absent from the stage for decades!
Hervé Niquet and Marshall Pynkoski undertake this doubly historical task. This project deliberately places the action in the reign of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, with whom Grétry's opera heroes were easily identified at the time: Grétry was, moreover, a familiar figure at the Opéra Royal since the performance of Céphale et Procris in 1773. The sets are in the style of the painted canvases and frames typical of the construction of the Opéra Royal, the costumes are those of pre-revolutionary France (and no longer of the Middle Ages of the creation), and the staging gives voice to Sedaine's rich text, which soon became famous.
If Grétry was Marie-Antoinette's favourite composer, his "Richard" is at the same time the culmination of a career, the announcement of an artistic style that Romanticism would capture, but also the powerful historical marker of a dying era. This an opportunity to bring the opera back into the great history of Versailles and France. And here is also the first complete production of the Royal Opera of Versailles since 1789!
