Presentation
With the Revolution and especially the Empire, France developed a very strong national feeling, which was to inspire orchestra and opera music throughout the 19th century. The considerable number of musicians involved, open-air performances, increased presence of wind instruments, created a new musical vision in France that Berlioz ideally represented in all its daring, scope and excesses.
At a time when freedom was becoming the driving force behind opera librettos, this new patriotic and heartfelt music, reached an ever-widening audience, and filled symphony halls and opera houses. Several pieces from the repertoire became public favourites and remain to this day the most faithful illustrations of their time: the choruses of Gounod and Berlioz’s Faust still resonate with the Immortal Glory of the French forefathers... and even more so in Château de Versailles, dedicated by Louis Philippe "to all the Glories of France" in 1838. A great connoisseur of the music of this period, Hervé Niquet could not have found better performers than the French army choir and the Republican guard orchestra, true musical emblems of the Nation!
