Presentation

Lasciate mi cantare !

If Mozart's passion for women’s voices is well-known, we mustn’t forget that his first great virtuoso opera arias were intended for castrati!  During the tour of Europe begun with his father, Mozart was asked to compose his first operas for the Italian stages where castrati triumphed in opera serias’ Primo Uomo roles. In Mitridate Re di Ponto, created in Milan in 1770 by the fourteen-year-old composer, three of the singers were castrati! Lucio Silla (Milan 1772), La Finta Giardiniera (Munich 1775), and even (at the same time as the composition of The Magic Flute) La Clemenza di Tito (Prague 1791) were to follow: in these Italian seria works, Mozart obviously left the leading role to the stars of the concert venues for which he composed or used their presence to enhance the work. The castrato Venanzio Rauzzini sang the splendid Exsultate Jubilate, dedicated to him, for the first time in Milan in 1773! The remarkable Franco Fagioli dedicates his splendid timbre to this repertoire, which brought Mozart his first great successes, and for which he wrote the virtuoso arias of his maturity. Dynamism, exacerbated feeling, valour and vocal virility are the order of the day!
