Couperin’s Leçons de Ténèbres (Tenebrae lessons) is a summit of French sacred music of the beginning of the 18th century. Voice and spirituality are skillfully combined, witnessing the refinement of fine French singing at the time of Louis XIV in salons and theatres as well as in places of worship.
The public thronged Paris convents to hear the divine voices of faceless young convent recluses, singing the Holy Week Leçons… The three surviving Leçons by François Couperin are written for Holy Wednesday. Clérambault’s Misere for women’s voices, its contemporary, deploys an equally expressive and contrasted range of emotions.
After recording these works at the Royal Chapel in autumn 2013 for Alpha/Versailes, Vincent Dumestre is offering the public a new opportunity to discover them.
