A Nocte Temporis
Reinoud Van Mechelen Haute-contre and Conductor
"A French Christmas" is the first programme by a nocte temporis, with a vocal and instrumental ensemble, centered on two masterpieces by Marc-Antoine Charpentier: The Christmas pastorals.
These two pastorals belong to the large collection of sacred works composed by Charpentier when he was at the service of the Duchesse de Guise around 1680.
Exceptionally, the composer sang himself the haute-contre (high tenor) parts he composed, he was known for his fine voice.
The music is composed for a small vocal and musical consort, with the specificity of a viol dessus playing in unison with the flutes. The first pastoral is the longest, with the deepest pitch: as the angels and shepherds await the arrival of the Lord, an angel comes to bring them the good tidings. Moved by the divine child, they are taken aback by the poor stable which serves as his abode. Masterfully illustrated, this composition introduces the second pastoral, a short story staging three shepherds and three shepherdesses celebrating the birth of Jesus-Christ.
Although they are part of the religious repertoire, these two pastorals are written in French and not in Latin!
