Troisième leçon de Ténèbres du Vendredi saint H.137

Marc-Antoine Charpentier has left a considerable musical legacy: no less than five hundred and fifty works, mainly composed for the church. But it would be wrong to see him as an austere devotee; on the contrary, his infinitely varied palette of colours and textures gives his music a very theatrical expressiveness, even in his most pieces specifically intended for the Catholic liturgy. It is not surprising, therefore, that he devoted such a considerable part of his work to the dramatic event par excellence for any 17th-century man: the story of the Holy Week, Passion and Resurrection of Christ.

After the Nativity, William Christie and Les Arts Florissants continue their exploration of Charpentier's religious music, with pieces composed for another essential celebration (if not the most essential) of the Catholic liturgy. They also return to some of their favourite works in this programme, which focuses on one of the composer's most astonishing series: the Leçons de Ténèbres. Taking their name from the conditions in which they were played (the candles were extinguished during their performance), these pieces sensitively deploy a very singular musical language to evoke the lamentations of Jeremiah, mixing Gregorian influences and ornate melisma.
