Presentation
Les Arts Florissants, directed by their founder and conductor William Christie, present a programme featuring Marc-Antoine Charpentier and André Campra.
Move hearts and stir souls: this is the goal of religious music, and one that was pursued by the composers working at the Chapelle Royale in Versailles, such as Marc-Antoine Charpentier (during Louis XIV's reign) and André Campra (a little later). The first composer's Psalms for the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nocturnes of Holy Week, precede the other's Requiem. One of the major works of the French Baroque, this Requiem displays virtuosity and dramatic effects that evoke the operatic aspect of the composer's career, while fitting perfectly into the form and style of a mass for the dead.
