Presentation

"In an improbable and dilapidated city of Verona, not futuristic but fictional, with a ruling, affluent class (Juliet’s family) and a wretched and exploited one (Romeo’s), the lovers’ union is forbidden and outlawed; a ubiquitous and brutal militia put in charge of controlling social order by Juliet’s family, is not only a Shakespearian image of fate, but also of the hold of power on one of the individual’s essential freedom: love. Romeo and Juliet although they sometimes submit, refuse, each in their own way, the way of life imposed by their social class, closed to any form of communication, as dictated by the conscience militia, hence the scandal of their love. Both would like to be elsewhere, each aspires to what the other has. The shock of passion will enable them to make the leap, to escape their destiny."

- Angelin Preljocaj -

Coproduction: 1996 Théâtre de St-Quentin-en-Yvelines • La Coursive – Scène nationale de La Rochelle • Les Gémeaux – Scène nationale de Sceaux • Théâtre de la Ville (Paris) • Fondation Paribas.
This choreography was awarded a Victoire de la Musique in 1997.
