Bach worked on his Mass in B minor intermittently for more than 25 years.
An abstract and purely spiritual mass of vast dimensions, it forms the crowning point of a life dedicated to sacred music.
The Mass in B minor is mostly made up of an assemblage of diverse pages taken from several older works by the composer and rewritten in the process called parody (in the historical sense of the word: “a text composed to be sung on a known music”).
The structure of the mass is a challenge because it assembles arias composed more than thirty years apart, for different numbers of singers and musicians, in different languages.
The challenge is easily conquered by Leonardo García Alarcón and his ensembles Cappella Mediterranea and the Choeur de Chambre of Namur.
