A beautiful "Christmas 1723 programme" signed by the young Bach, with works composed for Weimar and Leipzig, all conducted by Bach for his first Christmas as Cantor in Leipzig.

The splendid cantata "Christen, ätzet diesen Tag/ Christians, engrave this day", is Bach’s first Christmas cantata, composed in Weimar in 1713, probably performed again for the bicentenary of the Reformation in 1717, and finally on December 25th 1723 in Leipzig. With its four trumpets and its timbales, it is truly grandiose and aims to impress!

The cantata "Nun komm der Heiden Heiland/Come, Saviour of The Pagans" was composed for the first Sunday of Advent 1714 and played in the castle chapel. Bach played it again for his first Christmas in 1723 in Leipizig.

Bach’s Magnificat is an iconic work: in its first version composed for Christmas 1723, this work combines great inventiveness, choral counterpoint feats and beauty, and still deeply affect us today… Bach had arrived in Leipzig at the beginning of the year and needed to prove himself, this Magnificat designed as a monument of sacred music, combining piety and virtuosity to the majesty of a succession of extraordinary chorales. A complex system of plan “in mirror” also makes the Magnificat a true masterpiece of musical numerology.

Valentin Tournet and five wonderful soloists recreate an exuberant Bach programme for the Nativity, recorded for our collection Château de Versailles Spectacles: his first CD at 22.
