Bach composed the Christmas Oratorio in 1734 for the three days of Christmas and new year celebrations, connected to the birth of Christ and Epiphany. Composed of six brilliant cantatas, full of life and enthusiasm, this work magnifies the alternating grand chorales typical of Bach’s choral art and solo arias telling the moving and wonderful story of the Nativity and of the recognition of the divinity of Christ by the shepherds and the Wise Men.
The first cantata describes the birth of Jesus, the second the Annunciation, the third the adoration of the shepherds, the fourth the name of Jesus, the fifth and sixth the story of the Wise Men. With a constantly lively orchestra score, armed with drums and trumpets to express glorious moments and the faithfuls’ joy, Bach also created some of his most beautiful arias for soloists.
