Presentation
There are few events in the world that can match the elegance and glamour of a Gala dinner at the Château de Versailles.
The third Gala Dinner of the Friends of the Royal Opera presents the ballet Marie-Antoinette, a ballet for 22 dancers choreographed by Thierry Malandain with music of Joseph Haydn and Christoph Willibald Gluck.
Experience a dazzling evening at Versailles benefiting the most beautiful Theater in the world, with a champagne reception in the sumptuous neo-Gothic setting of the Crusades Room and a grand dinner in the majestic Gallery of Great Battles.
Before the ballet, (re)discover the famous Te Deum by Marc-Antoine Charpentier in the magnificent Royal Chapel. The prelude of this powerful fresco begins with the rythms of the trumpets and timbals symbolizing the 17th century of Louis XIV’s arts and conquests.
We would be very honored to have you join us for this gala dinner celebrating the tenth musical season of the Royal Opera.

Marie-Antoinette is a commission given by the Royal Opera to Thierry Malandain, one of our most beloved and greatest French choreographers, who previously staged two other Royal Opera commissions, Cinderella (2013) and Beauty and the Beast (2015). This new piece will be created on the stage of the Royal Opera, which was inaugurated in 1770 for her wedding with Dauphin Louis-Auguste, future king of France. The archduchess Marie-Antoinette, of course, went on to become the iconic Queen of France and Navarre.
In this ballet for 22 dancers, backed by Haydn and Gluck symphonies, Marie-Antoinette's court twirls around the Queen: the bodies spin, tangle, turn, stretch and explode. The ballet celebrates the Queen’s tastes for the arts, the theater, music and dance, as well as her outrageous hair buns, love affairs and tragic destiny!
